Geneva or Genève, in French, is the second-most-populous city in Switzerland after Zurich. Geneva is situated in Romandy, the French-speaking part of Switzerland where the still small Rhone River flows from the Valais into the Lake Geneva.

Geneva is the capital of the Republic and Canton of Geneva.

While the "ville de Genève" itself has a population of about 192,000 by the end of 2011, the canton of Geneva had 464,700 residents at the same period.

In the agglomeration franco-valdo-genevoise or Greater Geneva, two-thirds of  the population lives on Swiss territory and one-third on the French one.

Geneva is considered a "global city", a financial centre and an international centre for diplomacy and major UN international institutions.

It is also the place where the Geneva Conventions were once signed, which primarily concerned the treatment of wartime non-combatants and prisoners of war.

After London and Zurich Geneva is considered a major European financial platform. Geneva has been ranked the world's 13th most important financial centre by the Global Financial Centres Index.
The city has been referred to as the world's most compact metropolis and the "Peace Capital" of the world.
Geneva is still ranked one of the top ten most expensive city in the world.
